Language tests are more than just a way of monitoring learning levels. They should be seen as an optimal way to provide diagnosis and feedback of a student’s language skill to the instructors first and foremost. Unlike general education, determining current language proficiency is essential for the success of language training. By setting a target proficiency level, the learning path can be defined. A feedback test can be used to determine if the objectives have been achieved. I have worked for nearly two decades on the development of online language tests for a language test provider and supervised the setup of many language tests for comprehensive projects.

Language Levels

Classification

To determine valid entry levels, the CEFR A1 to C2 (Common European Framework of Reference for languages) is the key to success. The general rule is, the more skills that are diagnosed in the classification, the more accurate the current skill status will be. Depending on the needs, different test instruments can be utilized when determining the proficiency levels. As a result varying results ranging from a rough estimate to detailed diagnosis can be determined. I will choose the various tools prior to determining your needs and then deliver your proficiency profile as a basis for your decision.

Feedback Testing

Every successful teaching program must have a predetermined starting point and a defined goal. This helps to form the framework for teaching content. The steps needed to reach the goal can be illustrated by feedback testing thus increasing the student’s motivation. I utilize tools that check language level proficiency on up to four skill sets (speaking, writing, listening and reading), depending on the language level. I will deliver a feedback that will show you how far you are from reaching your defined language goals.

Special Language Testing

The more specific the requirements are within a job, the more technical and specific the terminology is needed for your professional language use. Currently, there are only a few possibilities for having your language abilities tested before changing job or starting a new one. Over the past five years, I have been involved in two large projects at the forefront of technical language test development for English and German. I would love to utilize this experience in assisting you.
