Even though the methodology and didactics of foreign language training are constantly changing, the language itself remains largely intact. The participants taking GFL / GSL – classes (German as a Foreign Language / German as a Second Language) require very different diverse didactic methods. I have been teaching in the GFL / GSL field for more than 25 years and find it exciting to continually adapt my teaching methods and programs to the meet these challenging demands.

Business Language Training

The key to successful corporate language training is having language instructors that not only understand the basic fundamentals of business language; they should also possess a good understanding of the everyday requirements of the various departments of the company in which they teach. It is not enough to teach the typical business communication forms (meetings, phone calls, and email correspondence); it is also about being up to date on the latest business structures that are developing within that company. For example, having a good overview of a company's reporting structures, SOP (Standard Operating Procedures), web conferencing protocols and how the company's corporate identity impacts their communication and language. I have led numerous corporate language courses as well as supervised teams of language instructors, coordinating course content in cooperation with business clients, departments and management staff.

Specialized Language Courses

When it comes to specialized language courses, one frequently discussed topic that comes up is: Does the language trainer need to have specialized knowledge or training in a specific field to be able to provide the necessary technical vocabulary and terminology? It is not necessary for an instructor to be an expert in that specialized field. The instructor must have an affinity for the specialized topic and have the general ability to relay the appropriate terminology in a cogent manner. The expectation is that the instructor is able to provide language training in the professional context of the student.

So in the event that work requirements take a student away from their normal lessons, they can schedule individual online lessons and have their online coach support them directly at their desk wherever they are. Over the years, I have continued to gain experience in a variety of distance-learning methods ranging from the telephone training, Skype, and now the wide range of web conferencing platforms available. This has allowed me to reach beyond the traditional geographical limitations in order to reach my clients.
